Asam Sahitya Sabha : A Detail Overview

The Asam Sahitya Sabha (অসম সাহিত্য সভা) literally known as Axom Xahityo Sabha or Assam Literary Society was the oldest literary-cultural organization of Assam. It was founded in the year 1917. The Literary Society of Assam or the Assam Sahitya Sabha was constituted for the development of Assamese language, to promote the culture and literature of Assam. 

The Motto of Assam Sahitya Sabha is "Chiro Chenehi Mor Bhasha Jononi" (My mother tongue – My eternal love). The organization is mainly a non Government, non profit, literary organisation of Assam. 

The first president of Asam Sahitya Sabha was Padmanath Gohain Baruah during the inaugural conference at Sibsagar in 1917. Lakshminath Bezbarua, Chandra Kumar Agarwala and Hemchandra Goswami were the leading members, also known as the Sabha’s Trimurti (trinity) who worked tirelessly for the uplift of Assamese literature. Asam Sahitya Sabha Patrika is an official journal of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.

Chandradhar Barua was the founder editor of Asam Sahitya Sabha Patrika journal. 

As well as the Asam Sahitya Sabha has introduced two prestigious biennial awards in the name two great icons in the field of culture and literature of Assam - ‘Dr Bhupen Hazarika International Solidarity Award’ and ‘Dr Indira Goswami (Mamoni Roysom Goswami) National Literature Award’.

Objectives of Assam Sahitya Sabha

Well the objectives of Assam Sahitya Sabha listed below :

• To make all round development of the Assamese language, literature and the culture of the State.

• Publications of Dictionary, Research works, monographs on languages, literature, culture, tribes and races etc., books on literary criticism, complete works of the great writers of Assam etc.

• To enquire, collect and research on ancient literature of the State of Assam.

• To provide financial help to the deserving writers who cannot afford to publish their books and literature for financial stringency.

• To promote music, art and sculpture of the State.

• To bring out leaflets, pamphlets etc. in order to publicize the Assamese language and literature.

• To promote exchange plans and schemes between Literature and Culture.

• To do such work which helps in expanding development of Assamese Language, Literature and  Culture.
